Sit. Rep. #50: Water, Water Everywhere

1- Canoe parts names:  Port is the left hand side of the boat when you are facing the front (bow) of the boat,  Starboard is the right hand side.  Bow is the front and stern is the rear.
Some canoes have identical seats – but some canoes have the bow seat with leg room between the seat & the bow deck.  The stern seat is right next to the stern deck.
Thwarts hold the sides of the canoe together & apart at the same time.  There are usually 2 thwarts.  The yoke is in the very middle of canoe where the canoe can be placed on someone’s shoulders to be carried / portage.   It is usually (slightly) notched to bend around your neck and rest more of the weight on your shoulders.

2- Canoe responsibilities:   Who drives and who provides propulsion?  Who is the captain?  Will you be a team working together?

3- What additional equipment do you need to go on a canoe trip? (think safety)

Harry Truman said this about politics: “If you want a friend in Washington, DC; get a dog.”

4- If you were spending a night on a river / canoe trip; how would you pack your pack differently than a backpacking hiking trip?

5- Resistors are electrical components that oppose the flow of current. We use them to control how much current flows in a circuit. The higher the resistance, the lower the current.
Most resistors have a fixed value, specified in ohms.  But some are designed to be variable.  You can change the resistance of the resistor by turning a shaft or sliding a control back and forth. Variable resistors, also called potentiometers, are often used to allow users to adjust the way a device operates.  Think volume control or light dimmer.

What electrical component opposes the flow of current in a DC circuit?     Resistor
What type of component is often used as an adjustable volume control?   Potentiometer
What electrical parameter is controlled by a potentiometer?    Resistance

A- What do trees do every spring?
B- Relief.

Be safe.  Seat belts cost less than wheelchairs.
